NYBA PROGRAMS

Tryout Central

Understand the travel selection process and arrive ready to participate.

Why NYBA holds tryouts

Travel basketball is a competitive program. Tryouts and evaluations help NYBA select teams under its documented evaluation procedures. The board member responsible for travel oversees the process.

Before you register

  • Review Travel Basketball and the Travel Family Guide to understand the commitment.
  • Check the published tryout registration listing for grades, eligibility, required sessions and instructions.
  • Consider whether your family can support practices, games, tournaments and travel.
  • Contact the travel program lead promptly if you have an eligibility question or a session conflict.

Preparing for a session

Follow the instructions provided with registration for arrival, equipment and participation. Come ready to listen, work hard, demonstrate basketball skills and be a supportive teammate. Follow staff directions and gym rules throughout the session.

Selection and communication

Registering or attending does not guarantee selection. Follow the program’s published instructions for how decisions will be communicated and what selected families need to do next. Direct process questions to the travel program lead.

Another pathway to play

Recreation basketball is NYBA’s foundation and provides a community basketball option for grades 3–8. Families can review the Rec League page and available registration offerings when considering their player’s next step.

Respectful participation

Players, families and volunteers follow NYBA’s Code of Conduct. Encourage effort and sportsmanship, respect the evaluation process and raise questions through the program lead.
