From a first basketball experience to competitive travel play, there is a pathway for every stage.
Start with your child’s grade
NYBA gives Newtown youth opportunities to learn and enjoy basketball in a safe, well-supervised and positive environment. Community recreation is the foundation of the association; competitive travel basketball complements it.
Pre-K and kindergarten: Biddy Basketball
A first introduction to basketball, group participation and the joy of learning something new. Explore the Biddy Basketball page for an overview.
Grades 1–2: Clinic
An instructional setting for building basketball fundamentals, confidence and teamwork before recreation league play.
Grades 3–8: Rec League
Community team basketball focused on skill development, balanced teams, equal playing time and sportsmanship. A strong fit for players who want to learn and enjoy playing with peers.
Grades 4–8: Travel Basketball
Competitive basketball against other communities for players ready for a greater commitment. Teams are selected through tryouts and evaluations. Families should review the Travel Basketball page, Tryout Central and the Travel Family Guide.
Grades 9–12: Senior League
A way for high school students to continue playing community basketball and stay connected to the game.
Choosing between recreation and travel
Recreation emphasizes broad participation and equal playing time. Travel adds team selection, outside competition and a greater attendance and travel commitment. Review program expectations and ask the program lead about any participation questions before enrolling.
Participation and access
NYBA’s bylaws state that no person will be denied the opportunity to participate on the basis of race, religion, sex, national origin, disability or financial hardship. Contact NYBA with questions about participation needs or financial assistance.
