NYBA PROGRAMS

Travel Basketball (Grades 4–8)

A competitive team experience for players ready for a greater basketball commitment.

Representing Newtown

NYBA travel basketball complements the community recreation program. Teams compete against other communities through the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL) and approved additional competition. Available teams and grade divisions are announced with each program year’s registration information.

Tryouts and team selection

Travel teams are selected through tryouts and evaluations conducted under NYBA’s documented evaluation procedures. Registering for tryouts does not guarantee a roster spot. Visit Tryout Central for an overview and check the published registration information for session details and eligibility.

The travel commitment

  • Players are expected to attend practices, league games, tournaments and playoffs.
  • Families should plan for travel to games outside Newtown.
  • Tell the coach promptly about an absence or scheduling conflict.
  • Bring effort, a willingness to learn and respect for teammates and opponents.

Coaches explain attendance expectations, player roles and team routines to families. Attendance, effort and preparation affect the team’s work and player roles.

Development and competition

Travel combines basketball instruction with competitive play. Players develop individual skills, team concepts and responsibility to their teammates. Playing time differs from recreation basketball and follows NYBA’s travel policies; consult the Travel Family Guide for the applicable expectations.

Costs, uniforms and team plans

Review Registration & Fees and the Travel Family Guide for program costs, uniform requirements and what is included. Additional leagues or tournaments require NYBA approval and may involve separate costs for participating families.

A positive team environment

The Code of Conduct and Athlete Safety Policy apply to travel activities and communications. Coaches and volunteers must be approved and screened. Start with the coach for team questions, then contact the board member responsible for travel if the matter is unresolved.
