NYBA PROGRAMS
Rec League (Grades 3–8)
Community basketball built around learning, equal participation and enjoyment of the game.
The foundation of NYBA
Recreation basketball gives Newtown players opportunities to develop skills, play with classmates and build friendships. Boys and girls recreation programs serve grades 3–8, with division structures confirmed for each program year.
Learning as a team
Players work on individual fundamentals and learn how to use them together in practices and games. Coaches emphasize teamwork, effort and sportsmanship alongside basketball skills.
Balanced teams and equal playing time
Program leaders form teams with competitive balance in mind. Evaluations may be used to help place players and build balanced teams; the program communicates any evaluation instructions to families. Team composition may be adjusted when needed to preserve parity.
Recreation playing time is equal by rule. Every player should have a meaningful opportunity to participate and develop. Questions about a failure to follow the playing-time rule should go to the board member responsible for the program.
Family expectations
- Attend team activities and tell the coach about absences.
- Cheer for players and let coaches provide instruction.
- Respect officials, volunteers, opponents and facility rules.
- Follow the Code of Conduct at practices, games and in team communications.
